Struggling to get on the Property Ladder?

Posted : 03-02-2017

Hard working junior lawyer, based in the big city but still living at the hotel of mum and dad? With property prices in London continuing to rise, and far and away outstripping salaries, it can seem an impossible task to get even a single toe on that property ladder.

Perhaps you are renting somewhere – paying twice or three times what your mortgage payments would be. Living with someone else’s poor choice of wallpaper, dodgy boiler and noisy upstairs neighbours who steal your post. Why do you put up with it?

Think again! We have an amazing array of employment opportunities for fee-earning paralegals, legal executives and junior solicitors, with prestigious firms paying generous salaries, in vibrant city locations where you can buy a house for under £50k! Some are habitable, needing only a lick of paint. Some are in need of more serious TLC. And some of them, frankly, require major surgery! But all of them offer you the chance to get both your feet firmly on the property ladder.

We’ve done a sweep of some of the property websites, and a sweep of our own job vacancies. Here’s our list of great places to work and live, where you can buy a house (yes, a whole house, not a flat) for under £50k, and get a job with a solid, well-respected firm with a minimum starting salary of at least £25k.

The cathedral city of Durham, with UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site status is a gorgeous place of cobbled streets strung out along the banks of the rushing river Wear, with a lively café culture, and home to one of the UK’s leading universities. GLAMORGAN / the Rhondda Valley

The Rhondda valley was once the prosperous mining heart of south Wales, but the closure of the pits has left many of the little mining villages impoverished. However, this area of outstanding natural beauty is only a thirty minute drive into Cardiff, and the last few years has seen a steady level of investment in property here, with a slow but discernible rise in prices. This is borne out by the fact that our job vacancies for this area include a very high proportion of conveyancing roles, a sure sign of a very promising property market.

Like many of the cities in this list, Liverpool boasts superb architecture, reflecting its past status as one of the richest trading ports in the world. In 2008 Liverpool was European Capital of Culture and is continuing to build on its international reputation; accordingly, many of the UK’s global law firms have an office in this region.
