London Legal Walk 2012

Please help us raise money for The London Legal Support Trust. On the 21st May James and Andy will be attending the 2012 London Legal Walk to raising money to enable access to justice for all.

Access to justice should be equally available to everyone, regardless of their financial situation. This principle is at the cornerstone of the legal justice system in England and Wales. In practice it is not the case.

Advice Agencies and Citizens Advice Bureaux work very hard to try to ensure that vulnerable people do have a way of accessing justice through a mixture of “Legal Aid” (publically funded work), funding from local authorities and charitable donations and by using pro bono volunteers.

Receiving the legal advice they need makes a huge difference to these people’s lives, reducing debt, poverty and homelessness, and combating discrimination and injustice. You can see some examples of how individuals, families and communities have been helped here.

The London Legal Support Trust works to support law centres, legal advice agencies in London and the South East by providing them with grant funding alongside other forms of support. We do this by holding large fundraising events, most notably the London Legal walk, and then delivering those funds to the agencies where they are most needed through grant rounds. We offer our knowledge and experience of the sector to help the agencies to become more sustainable and help to partner them with law firms, and chambers who want to help them ensure the law is fair.

We are part of a network of seven Legal Support Trusts across England and in Wales working with the Access to Justice Foundation to support pro bono and advice agencies, ensuring funds can be distributed where needed most throughout England and Wales. Free Advice – Starting a Career in Law

If you are looking to start a career in law one of the best ways to get your first step on the ladder is to join a practice as a Paralegal or Caseworker. The majority of law firms will look to invest in people they already employ and will offer the majority of training contracts to people they have had chance to see the potential in. By starting as a Paralegal provides you the opportunity to showcase your skills and ability to a firm and put you in an excellent position to progress your career.

With positions of this level, most law firms will look to recruit directly as competition is fierce and they have little need to involve an agent. Two of the best ways to gain a junior role in a law firm is to contact firms directly or to keep an eye on the websites they advertise on and apply for roles as and when they come up.

The Law Society website is very useful at discovering the firms in the geographical area you wish to work in, that cover the areas of law in which you wish to specialise. By using the “Find a Solicitor” facility you can narrow down these results and once you have a list of firms you are interested in, look through the different websites (in particular the careers pages) and make direct contact and introduce yourself. Even if they do not have an active vacancy, most firms will hold your CV on file in the event a position does become available.

Regularly searching websites for roles can be a time consuming process as the majority of roles will be for candidates who already have some experience or they will be agency adverts. One of the best places I have found for junior roles is Lawcareers.net. The majority of the vacancies on this website are for Paralegals, Caseworkers, Researchers, Administrators etc and is a great place to start. Another good place to look is on Gumtree.

You are probably asking yourself why, as an agent, we are suggesting going to firms directly as this means we are losing out on a fee? We recognise that law firms will rarely use an agent for positions of this type. We hope that in the long run we can help candidates follow their dreams of a career in law and if they need an agent in the future we can be of assistance then.

Law Firms Beginning To Hire Again

Recent research has indicated that law firms across the country are gradually beginning to recover from the impact of the global economic meltdown. Both profitability and staffing levels have started to increase as a result of a number of factors. One of the main factors affecting this improvement, identified by the Law Society’s Law Management Section’s Financial Benchmarking Survey 2011, was the reduction of non-salary overheads. By taking a close look at these aspects of their expenditure, practices have been able to look at increasing their fee earning potential by investing in new staff.

Cambridgeshire Professionals’ Golf Day 2011

Thank you to all those who attended the first Cambridgeshire Professionals’ Golf Day on Friday 23rd September. The weather was excellent and the course at the Menzies was immaculate which made for a great day’s golf. With representatives from over 20 local organisations attending the day many have come away meeting potential new clients or cemented existing relationships.

Unfortunately no one came away with the Mercedes C-Class which was kindly donated by Robinsons Mercedes-Benz but congratulations to Peter Thom from Green Heat Ltd who won the day with a outstanding score of 38 points.

Spaces for next years’ event are already beginning to fill up so if you could not make this years event and would be interested in taking part in 2012 please contact me.

Changes To Family Law

From April 6^th 2011 anyone wishing to go to court to contest the terms of their separation will first be required to consider mediation, under a new protocol agreed between the Ministry of Justice and the Judiciary. This is likely to take the form of a one off mediation awareness session, where both parties find out what the process can offer before they decide if it is right for them, and mirrors the system already in place for couples granted legal aid.

The requirement has been added to the Family Procedure Rules and will require the individual initiating a case to first go to a professional mediator, who will engage the other party and arrange a mediation awareness session to explain the process to the two of them.

Many law practices are now seeking Family Mediators in order to tap into this new legislation as those firms who cannot provide this facility could potentially see cases moving to those practices better equipped to undertake a case from initial instruction through to either mediated settlement or litigation.
