The majority of law firms will look to invest in people they already employ and will offer the majority of training contracts to people they have had chance to see the potential in. By starting as a Paralegal provides you the opportunity to showcase your skills and ability to a firm and put you in an excellent position to progress your career.</p>
<p style="font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">With positions of this level, most law firms will look to recruit directly as competition is fierce and they have little need to involve an agent. Two of the best ways to gain a junior role in a law firm is to contact firms directly or to keep an eye on the websites they advertise on and apply for roles as and when they come up.</p>
<p style="font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">The Law Society website is very useful at discovering the firms in the geographical area you wish to work in, that cover the areas of law in which you wish to specialise. By using the &#8220;<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong><a href="http://www.lawsociety.org.uk/choosingandusing/findasolicitor.law">Find a Solicitor</a></strong></span>&#8221; facility you can narrow down these results and once you have a list of firms you are interested in, look through the different websites (in particular the careers pages) and make direct contact and introduce yourself. Even if they do not have an active vacancy, most firms will hold your CV on file in the event a position does become available.</p>
<p style="font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Regularly searching websites for roles can be a time consuming process as the majority of roles will be for candidates who already have some experience or they will be agency adverts. One of the best places I have found for junior roles is <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong><a href="http://www.lawcareers.net/ImmediateVacancies.aspx">Lawcareers.net</a></strong></span>. The majority of the vacancies on this website are for Paralegals, Caseworkers, Researchers, Administrators etc and is a great place to start. Another good place to look is on <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong><a href="http://www.gumtree.com/paralegal-legal-jobs">Gumtree</a></strong></span>.</p>
<p style="font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">You are probably asking yourself why, as an agent, we are suggesting going to firms directly as this means we are losing out on a fee? We recognise that law firms will rarely use an agent for positions of this type. One of the main factors affecting this improvement, identified by the Law Society&#8217;s Law Management Section&#8217;s Financial Benchmarking Survey 2011, was the reduction of non-salary overheads. By taking a close look at these aspects of their expenditure, practices have been able to look at increasing their fee earning potential by investing in new staff.</p>

This is likely to take the form of a one off mediation awareness session, where both parties find out what the process can offer before they decide if it is right for them, and mirrors the system already in place for couples granted legal aid.</p>
<p style="font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">The requirement has been added to the Family Procedure Rules and will require the individual initiating a case to first go to a professional mediator, who will engage the other party and arrange a mediation awareness session to explain the process to the two of them.</p>
<p style="font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Many law practices are now seeking Family Mediators in order to tap into this new legislation as those firms who cannot provide this facility could potentially see cases moving to those practices better equipped to undertake a case from initial instruction through to either mediated settlement or litigation.</p>

<p style="font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">In the study of 130 staff across 5 law firms based in the City, all had diversity policies, and had successfully recruited ethnic minority candidates, but rejected able working-class students because they felt that they wouldn&#8217;t be able to put them in front of their clients.</p>
<p style="font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">It is essential that candidates dress appropriately for interview and remain polite and courteous throughout as this first impression is vital. Interviewers will use this as an opportunity to see how a candidate would potentially represent them as a firm in front of clients and will be looking for staff that will help the firm enhance it&#8217;s reputation, not jeopardise it.</p>
